Tena is about 5 hours by bus from Quito and a great place to start your exploration of the jungle. The town has grown a lot over the last 10 years and now has a variety of restaurants, hotels, and other amenities.

Why Visit
Many visit Tena as a starting point for tours going deeper into the jungle, but Tena is most famous for its various rivers. White water rafting and kayaking are popular sports in the area. You can find experienced raft companies with a long history in Tena. Whether you want to hike in the jungle, go rafting, or learn how to make chocolate there are tours available for people of all ages.
Climate
Tena doesn’t really have distinct rainy and dry seasons. Each day is different. But expect to see some rain and sun while you’re in town. In the evening temperatures drop so most people don’t have air conditioning (though many hotels offer it). Sometimes you might even want a light jacket in the evening. Due to its close proximity to the mountains and higher elevation, Tena does not tend to have much mosquito borne illness which is often associated with jungle areas. Malaria and yellow fever are pretty much unheard of. Although at times there are a few cases of dengue.
